About

Main Street Psychiatry is an independent psychiatry practice staffed by Alex Gertner, M.D., Ph.D. offering medication management and psychotherapy in-person and virtually to clients located in North Carolina. ABOUT DR. GERTNER Dr. Gertner completed medical training at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, and psychiatry residency at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. Dr. Gertner was motivated to become a psychiatrist after working for several years in human rights advocacy, noting the paucity of person-centered mental healthcare. He's an Adjunct Professor at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. GUIDING PRINCIPLES: Person-centered: valuing human dignity and agency, responsive to priorities and values of clients Evidence-informed: critically considering best available research Trauma-informed: mindful of lasting impact of trauma and focused on creating safe, supportive spaces Liberatory: cognizant of and responsive to mental health harms of systems of oppression, including how these have shaped psychiatric practices A.I.-free: human care for humans SERVICES: Psychiatric medication management: guided by careful consideration of risk and benefits of medications, acknowledging individualized needs and experiences, and employing joint decision-making Psychodynamic psychotherapy: aimed at personal growth, meaning, and realization in addition to symptom relief CONDITIONS/ISSUES ADDRESSED INCLUDE: Anxiety, Depression, Trauma, OCD, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder Currently open to clients 18 years and older FEES/INSURANCE: Initial 15 min phone consultation: $0 90 min intake appointment: $295 30 min follow-up medication management appointment: $195 55 min follow-up psychotherapy and medication management appointment: $295 Main Street Psychiatry is out-of-network with insurance. Payment can be made with credit card, debit, card, HSA or FSA. We can provide a 'super-bill' that can be submitted to insurance for reimbursement. Fees support a number of sliding scale treatment spots for uninsured and under-insured individuals. Sliding scales spots are available through referral from a healthcare professional and are allotted based on financial and health needs. Medicare regulations prevent us from seeing Medicare-covered individuals regardless of method of payment. WHAT TO EXPECT: Schedule a free 15-min phone consultation through secure client portal or by calling directly to determine if Main Street Psychiatry is a good fit for you. If so, schedule a 90 minute comprehensive intake appointment. For medication management services, it's typical to have a 30 min medication management appointment every 3-4 months or more frequently if needed. For medication management and psychotherapy services, it's typical to have weekly or bi-weekly 55 min appointments. There is not typically a charge related to communication between appointments unless these involve >20 minutes of work. Adult ADHD assessment requires its own 55 minute visit. So first-time clients who would like to be assessed for ADHD should expect a 90 minute comprehensive intake and an additional 55 minute session focused on ADHD assessment. PARKING: Parking is available in the gravel lot behind 206 W Main Street in spots that are not marked as reserved. Please do not park in spots in front of the building belonging to Akai Hana Restaurant. If the gravel lot is full, there is a close-by municipal parking lot around the corner on W Weaver St.
